Footbridge Officially Opened

Hampshire County Council (HCC) had to close a path in Stratfield Turgis back in October 2012 due to a failing  / potentially dangerous bridge.

The Parish Meeting (Chairman Sheila Campbell / Councillor Simon Boase) contacted HCC to enquire about the bridge being replaced as the closure had a significant impact on the wider access to the countryside and local circular walks. HCC was unable to provide a very positive response as there are currently a number of bridges closed across the county and the limited resources available to address these was under significant pressure.

Simon spoke to the manager of the Stratfield Saye Estate (James Hare) to seek their assistance. The Estate were experienced in bridge building and proposed a design with costing’s. The proposed solution represented very good value for money. HCC obtained design approval from their Engineering Consultancy and once received provided the Parish Meeting with a grant for them to undertake the works under their own powers.

The Parish Meeting instructed the Estate to proceed as their contractors and have now managed this project through to successful completion.

The Bridge was officially opened by Sheila Campbell on 1st August
